Irving Ave, Varick Ave

Image
This was my second day of taking a walk in the morning before work in the middle of a heat wave because I didn't learn my lesson the day before. This time I only had to go as far as Halsey St because I'd already walked part of Irving Ave. And then I began a "Covert" op ... by walking a block down Covert St. (If you've read that joke before, thank you for being a loyal follower!) I didn't get far before along Irving before I saw the mural painted on the building, shown below. Time for some greenery! There was a tree outside the Suydam Magnet School (PS 123) that looked nice, so I took a picture. I then discovered that the area in front of the school is called the Joseph Gallagher Gardens. Across the street is Maria Hernadez Park, named for an anti-drug crusader. Next up is Flushing Ave and over to Varick Street. The first highlight on Varick is a railroad crossing that I swear ...

Wilson / Morgan Aves

As the school year wound down and while state testing was taking place, I found myself with a later schedule. So I took advantage of my late start to get a walk in before work. This had the side benefit of avoiding 100+ temps after school (and that was NOT including humidity into the Heat Index!). The downside of doing this is that is was hard to read my phone the way the lighting was (and my glasses were polarized) so I found it difficult to count the streets from Flushing Ave, and trying to tell what was a street and what was a driveway on the map wasn't easy either. In any event, I'd already walked down Harrison and McKibben before. I wasn't supposed to go down Harrison and I should've realized it when I saw the subway station and the park that I should've been one block south. Oh, well, that can wait for next school year. After the summer is over. I started by passing my stop and riding the train all the way to Wilson Ave. From there, it was a straig...

Windsor Terrace Streets

Image
It seems like I didn't take a video for this walk. If I did, it's been deleted. I wanted to finish the streets in Windsor Terrace between Prospect Park and the Expressway. I didn't expect this to be a long walk but there was a lot of back and forth and then I decided to walk to the D train, which was farther than I thought it was -- even though I've walked this route a few times already! First up was Windsor Place, starting at the subway exit near Prospect Park West. That ends when it hits the park where it turns south. I turned west onto Terrace Place. (Get it? Windsor Place & Terrace Place?). Then a quick turn up Sherman St, which has a small court named Horace Court. I almost missed it. I tried taking a picture over the fence at the dead end, but I just got trees. From there I turned left down 11th Ave for a couple of blocks and then reversed back to Sherman, which I took up to 10th Ave. Heading southwest on 10th ...
