Walkin' In Brooklyn

Heading down East New York Ave ... on purpose. A pretty straightforward walk, mainly down two streets. ... And a little plug for A Bucket Full of Moonlight I've covered part of East New York Ave before, but the L train was still the best place to start the trip. I have no idea what that building is (Google Maps doesn't label it) but it belongs to the NYPD. The razor on top of the walls caught my attention. The third photo is the 3 train emerging from Utica Ave on its way to Livonia. I can't find this playground on the map, but it must be somewhere between the train and where Empire Blvd splits off from East New York Ave. A block later at Utica Avenue, East New York Ave splits for a block as well. I took a couple of buses -- and I wish I'd planned out the connections better -- to get almost all the way to Kings Plaza. This is something that I've never done before. My actual goal was Flatbush Ave and Avenue S, which meet at the beginning of Utica Ave. I've been down around here to go to the Floridian Diner a few times, but other than that, this was always "No Man's Land". Well, not, really, but it wasn't on the way to anywhere that we needed to go. It's very industrial at the bottom end, with a lot of garages I walked around. After that, I noted the number of Family Dollar, Dollar General, and the like, along with the number of fast food places, such as Popeye's, Wendy's and McDonald's. Even a White Castle. It is a major road, but it was still surprising to see so many on the same road only a couple miles apart on the same four-mile stretch. There really wasn't much to see when I started. To make up for the short walk I took the day before, I sojourned more than four miles on this day. I'm not sure if I realized that it would be quite this far. However, I had streets in Crown Heights that I needed to walk and it made sense to start in Brownsville from the L train and walk west toward Prospect Park instead of taking a train all the way to the park and looping around two streets like I did over the Christmas break (when I started my train ride from home). Besides Pitkin and Montgomery, I had a couple of small streets here, including an orphanded section of Union Street, Portal Street and Buffalo Ave. The trip starts, as I stated already, on the L train, getting off at the Sutter Ave station (with its fancy stained glass) and then walking up Junius Street to Pitkin Ave. Once there, I found myself standing next to the East New York Industrial Building, and under a sign stating that I was in the East New York Business District, neither of which I knew existed,...
