Albany to Schenectady / Holy Cross Cemetery / Cortelyou

Image
It took some time -- and another break from school -- to get back to East Flatbush and finish the streets between Kings County Hospital and Holy Cross Cemetery. Thankfully, I walked those dead end streets last summer when I was out with Katie Vasquez for Currents TV. Also, once I'd learned (or, "reminded", I should say) that my grandparents were buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, I made a point of locating them, which wasn't easy because there was no one to ask and the signs weren't particularly good. Before I was able to notice the codes on the bottom right of the headstones (some of which are quite weathered), I was searching their database to discover the location of the dearly departed I stood in front of. After that, I walked back to the subway along Cortelyou Road. The trip started at Nostrand Ave, walking east along Church Ave once along, and turning south onto East 37 Street. Then I followed Snyder Ave to East 42 Street. The first three pic...

Eramus / Lloyd / Veronica Pl / E 26 Street

This is the walk that reminded me that I need to be sure my phone is charged before I leave work! I have no idea why the battery would've run down because that's never a problem. Something must've been running while I was at school and I hadn't noticed. At any rate, I was almost at the end of my walk. I was a block away from Brooklyn College, and I had to get to Bedford Ave to catch a bus. On the bright side, when I charged the phone and restarted the app, it had paused my walk at this point, and hadn't deleted it. I'm venturing farther past Flatbush Ave into sections of Brooklyn that I've never been in before (that I remember). Basically, I was up to E 26 Street, but there are other short streets in the area that I had to swing around. In the end, the walk was under three miles, which is short for me these days. Church Ave brought me to Bedford, which brought me to Erasmus. That was followed by a quick detour (not pictured). The last time I was ...

Newkirk / E 34 / Clarkson

This was one of my "backward" walks. Instead of heading south from the park toward Kings Highway (or Ave H), I started from Newkirk and went north to the park. By doing this, I could get a subway home, rather than a crowded bus. The walk started at Newkirk Plaza, a place I know well from my Brooklyn College days (although not as well as I should, I think). I went south to Foster Ave and circled around to Marlborough Road for one block to Newkirk and the crossed the bridge over the tracks. Between scaffolding and traffic, it was a few blocks before I took any more pictures on Newkirk, but whenever something catches my eye, I'll stop and wait for traffic to pass. Newkirk bends due east at Flatbush Ave. It seems to get a little more narrow but that could just be an illusion from the buildings being closer to the street, not the street itself being skinnier. At E29 Street, we get the back of St. Jerome, which has its front on Nostrand A...
