Newkirk / E 34 / Clarkson
This was one of my "backward" walks. Instead of heading south from the park toward Kings Highway (or Ave H), I started from Newkirk and went north to the park. By doing this, I could get a subway home, rather than a crowded bus.
The walk started at Newkirk Plaza, a place I know well from my Brooklyn College days (although not as well as I should, I think). I went south to Foster Ave and circled around to Marlborough Road for one block to Newkirk and the crossed the bridge over the tracks.
Between scaffolding and traffic, it was a few blocks before I took any more pictures on Newkirk, but whenever something catches my eye, I'll stop and wait for traffic to pass.
Newkirk bends due east at Flatbush Ave. It seems to get a little more narrow but that could just be an illusion from the buildings being closer to the street, not the street itself being skinnier.
At E29 Street, we get the back of St. Jerome, which has its front on Nostrand Ave. I've passed this before, of course. St. Jerome has been in Flatbush since 1901. (The website says "East Flatbush" but that's farther east, I think.)
I could be wrong about where East Flatbush starts, however, because the next picture is currently a "Success Academy", but the building used to be (or maybe still is?) East Flatbush Middle School.
Moving on, an ugly corner building. It's not as others as others but it sticks out like a sore thumb next to the homes next to it. And then it's the end of the line for Newkirk Ave. For all that time at Brooklyn College and despite having friends in the area (closer to the Brighton line), I hadn't any idea that it was relatively a short block.
Next up, I did a loop down E 35 Street and across Victor Road to get to the end of E 34 Street.
I hadn't walked far on E 34 Street before I came to a memorial. I didn't get the details.
The street wasn't long, but it was longer than I expected, probably because I saw Clarendon and I was thinking it was Clarkson. I had much farther to go. Also, E34 doesn't go to Clarkson -- it ends at Lenox Road.
Time to finish off Clarkson Ave. Last time I was here, I had to jump over to Parkside because I missed a couple of blocks there. There was a lot of construction and then another ugly building popped up.
I took three shots of the first mural. This is the best one. The parked cars, the lamppost, and the traffic made it difficult to get a shot. The one around the corner was easier.
And finally, this was the front gate of an otherwise nondescript apartment building. Unfortunately, as I got there, a couple people came out and stopped there to smoke and make calls. So I walked past it to get them out of the frame. I would've like to have gotten the front door in the background, but you can't have everything.
And that's it for this trip. Come back soon.
