Walkin' In Brooklyn

The last official walk of the year. If I rememeber correctly, it started to rain so I stopped at 2.99 miles. As it was, I'd already walked that left stretch of Myrtle before, but it was the most convenient train station. The M train would've brought me back to Manhattan and easily added more than a half hour to my trip home. This Friday in December was a good time to finish off some of the streets closer to work. I also stumbled across Buskwick Court, which appears to be a private street, but it has a name and I had access, so I walked in and out. Moore Street only runs two blocks from Bushwick to Bogart. The first block has been renamed Reverend Doctor Jeremiah Fennell St. In 1966, the Rev. Dr. Fennell was appointed Pastor of the Mount Calvary Church, and in 1978 was appointed Presiding Elder of Liberia, West Africa, where he organized 23 churches. He was also the founder and general chairman of the Fennell Day Care Center, which continues to operate to this day. ...

The main walk was Prospect Place in Crown Heights, but, of course, I had to get there, and if I could get there and mark off a couple more streets along the way, so much the better. Today's walk started at the Bushwick Ave/Alberdeen Street station on the L train. I walked over to Broadway to the start of Mother Gaston, which I took until was interrupted by Fulton Street and Eastern Parkway. I walked to the end of Truxton Ave and then back along Callahan-Kelly Playground to Sackman Street. I'd already walked on the northern end of Sackman. I walked across the plaza, shown here. I continued on Sackman until it was interrupted again by the LIRR tracks rising out of the ground again. I couldn't cross over, so I had to go around, trekking over to Eastern Parkway to swing around the tracks and the overpass. And then back again. East New York Ave brought me to Prospect Place, which runs less than a full city bloc...

When I walked all the north-south streets in Bed-Stuy, a couple were left behind as I moved to other neighborhoods. Malcolm X Blvd is the last main street that I had to walk. (There might be a couple of minor streets that I did later.) The last time I was here, other than crossing it from east to west, was when I had an interview at a high school in Bushwick near Myrtle Ave and then had to get back to Boys and Girls High School on Fulton Street. Rather than take the train (which would've easily been over an hour going to Manhattan and back to Brooklyn, I saw that there was a bus that went down Malcom X. Blvd which got me to the school in about 20 minutes. Stanwix Street starts at Flushing Ave and runs parallel to Bushwick Ave. However, Bushwick turns when it intersects Beaver, and Stanwix ends when it hits Bushwick.
