Ave D

Sweeping farther south, I'm moving into Canarsie. These westbound walks will be among the longest I take because Canarsie streets are angling away from the more vertical Flatbush streets. And, of course, there are fewer transit options. The first leg of the journey is a quick (not quick enough) trick down Van Sinderen Ave, which seems creepy whichever block of it I've walked down. After one block, I shifted over beneath the "L" train to the start of Ave D. The first street sign I saw was at E 105 Street. I had a lot of blocks to go! And I'd already walked a bit. I probably should've walked up and down a couple of blocks so I wouldn't have to do them later, but the walk was already going to take a lot out of me. When I got to E 89 Street, Ave D curves south and merges into Foster Ave. It disappears for a little bit. I traveled this section of Foster Ave many times by car visiting a friend that lived...

Foster Ave / E 26 Street / Lott Street

This is why I plan things out -- and yet things still go wrong. I was supposed to go up E 25 Street, not E 26 Street, which I did some time before this. The problem was I was walking south then, not north, so I didn't realize my mistake. Unfortunately, my glasses were tinted and my phone was dim in the bright light, so I didn't discover my mistake until Lott Street wasn't where it was supposed to be! First off, March 10 was MAR10 Day, so I drew one on the blackboard. I liked how it came out. It could've been much worse. This was a short walk to fill in a few blocks. I got off the train at Newkirk Ave and exited the plaza area on the Newkirk end so that I could walk the one block of E17 Street, beyond the plaza buildings. The buildings here are facades for the stores behind them but look like buildings. Once I got to Foster Ave, I turned east toward Flatbush Ave, where I stood on a tiny island created by Flatbush, Bedford and Foster Aves. After that I un...

New Lots Ave / Ditmas Ave / Clarendon Rd

Cold temps, high winds (with their chills), and ridiculous amount of snow on the ground that just wouldn't go away confined my walks to the immediate neighborhood around my house -- and even then, I didn't go out very much. Very few walks in February. But soon it was time to march forth! Or, rather, I took a walk on March 4th. Moving south along the L train to the New Lots Ave station. This was something new for me. I'm starting north of Linden Blvd but dropping below and crossing under Holy Cross Cemetery, heading west all the way to Flatbush Ave and beyond (to the Q line). A quick walk down the end of the New Lots Ave brought me to Watkins St, which is only one block long, running to Linden Blvd. Linden brought me to Rockaway Ave, which quickly brought me to Ditams Ave. Ditmas was industrial in this area, and I found myself walking in the street alot. I left Ditmas Ave when I got to Clarendon Road. I...
