Linwood / Essex / Shepherd / Berman (Spring Creek)

This was a short walk because I already walked through Udall's Cover Park Preserve not an hour before this. This was also a substitute walk. I planned on walking through The Hole , a below-sea-level neighborhood on the Brooklyn/Queens border, squeezed in between S. Conduit Ave and Linden Blvd. (You'd think given its isolation that it would be in one or the other, but, No.) Simply put, as I drove down 78th Street (which is technically Queens), I noted the state of the roads and the places to park. I also noticed that the only two people I passed seemed neither happy nor pleasant. I turned down DuMont and then Amber (named streets are Brooklyn, basically), which were still bad, so I drove slowly, and switched to East New York. I did notice that things were a little better toward the other end of Dumont as I drove on. Maybe I could return there with other people, or just without the car. As nice as it would be to have the car to get out of there, I'd be...

Side Trip: Udall's Cove Park Preserve

Image
There isn't much to say about this one. I was out in Great Neck for a morning appointment, which finished early. I was looking for something to do or some place to go before I drove back to Brooklyn. A few parks came up, including Udall's Cove Park Preserve. I guess Udall's Cove is the name of the local area, but this park in surrounded by streets. You have Douglas Road and Sandhill Rd on two sides of a triangle and the LIRR cutting it off. I basically walked through twice, once looping around back to where I started and the second time, taking a different turn. I worried for half a minute that I was going to deep on dirt roads and that I might get turned around. That was ridiculous. I actually came to the entrance on the opposite side of the park. I did a U-turn, and walked back. In short, it was nice and pleasant to walk through, and short. Also, don't walk through it in shorts. I scratched my legs a bit. ...

New York Ave / Malbone Street / Clove Road

Image
The day's goal was to walk the rest of New York Ave, from Eastern Parkway to Brooklyn College. There was a small side quest not long after I started. Just before Empire Blvd, there's a half-block long side street, Malbone Street. It leads into Clove Road, which runs diagonal the Nostrand and New York Aves, connecting Montgomery Street with Empire Blvd. Walking up Clove Road is curious because the blacktop gives out, and I was basically on a foot path. However, at the top of the hill, despite no curb cut on Montgomery, there's a lamppost with a sign for Clove Road. In any case, there is a lot of construction here, and whatever this street used to be, and whyever this street is shaped as it is, it's about to become The Next Big Thing. Being so close to Nostrand, the Sterling St IRT stop is steps away. Back onto New York Ave, facing south. I'll be honest with you -- I have no idea where this second picture is from. I guess I took ...
