Untermeyer Gardens (Yonkers)
Sometimes you just want to get out of the city and do something. So I did something. A friend and I drove up to Yonkers -- on purpose -- to head to the Untermeyer Gardens estate. A century old and being restored, the gardens sprawl out on a hill overlooking the Hudson River with splendor reminiscent of Ancient Rome, Athens, or Alexandria. And there are some columns here that are about 2,000 years old. Imported, of course.
Early 20th-century opulence. The Garden feel on hard times but they are being restored. This blog entry will be basically a photo dump, but I'll start with the videos I took.

I did have another destination or two nearby in case this place was a bust. Thankfully, it was not. It lived up to and exceeded expectations. We left early enough that we could've hit a museum but declined to do so. The only two stops we made were to McDonald's for another coffee -- where we saw Grimace and the Hamburglar in the parking lot. Confession: I wanted a picture with the Hamburglar, but there wasn't an empty spot in the lot or on the surrounding block. I had to settle for the drive-through and some disappointment. Second, there was some historic park nearby, not to far out of the way, but when we got there, it was literally just a baseball field. We laughed a little at that one because we missed a turn at first and then when we actually got there, we thought we'd missed another turn or something but the GPS said we'd arrived!
I'll close with this video, because I made it the same evening.
MY NEWEST BOOK IS AVAILABLE NOW!Burke's Lore Briefs: Yesterday's Villains, the following to Tomorrow's Heroes is now available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. If Heroes who don't die live long enough to become the villain, what happens to Villains who live long enough? When do schemes of global conquest become dreams of a quiet place away from all those annoying people you once wanted to subjugate? And does anyone really want to rule over the world's ashes if it means we can't have nice things? | ![]() |
