Saratoga Ave / Church Ave
Now that I've gotten the hang of going into Brownsville and walking east, and having finished the entire length of Kings Highway, there was no reason not to walk down Church Ave. And this walk started at Saratoga Ave, which brought me to start of Church Ave.
The first three blocks were from Saratoga and Livonia down to E 98 Street. Another half block south to get to the start of Church Ave, which runs southwest at this point and crosses Linden Blvd.
There's a triangular plot of land known as the Linden Sitting Area, and I think I did sit for a couple of months before taking more pictures and moving along.
After Remsen and Ralph (by E 89 St), Church Ave hooks to the right a little and runs west. In just one block, I went from E 89 Street to E 59 Street. Brooklyn is cool this way!
Google Maps tells me that the right of way street that was created to make right turns onto Church Ave from the northern side of Ralph Ave is called Bob Marley Boulevard. The placement of the sign says that that street is still Church Ave because the two signs are flush.
I took pictures of the intersections at Ralph, Kings Highway, and Utica just because they were major intersections.
Amusingly, I just deleted three photos because I had "doubles", except in the first of each pair, a car, truck, or person entered the frame as I was getting the photo. This is why my average walking speed is getting slower.
Brooklyn is known as the Borough of Churches, and Church Ave pretty much proves this. There are many traditional churches, storefront churches, and buildings that are somewhere in between.
I passed many storefront before I got to Rogers Ave. Actually, Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church is on the corner of Veronica Place, just past Rogers. The next photo is the rectory building next to the church.
Just down the block from there is Providence House.
I've passed by the Flatbush African Burial Ground before when I went down Bedford Ave. The cemetery dates to the 17th century on land formerly owned by the adjacent Flatbush Reformed Dutch Church.
I finally made it to Flatbush Ave where you can find the Flathbush Dutch Reformed Church, built in 1798. Services had been held at this location in previous buildings since 1654. There's a cemetery behind it that I've taken pictures of before.
This finishes off all of Church Ave as I've already walked the everything to the west of Flatbush on Church Ave. So I walked over to the Brighton line and made my way home. I'd definitely worked up an apetite for breakfast!
And that's it for this trip. Come back soon.
