Van Brunt St / Richards St / Visitation Place
A Saturday walk in Red Hook! And a nice day for it as well. I had to drive to a park in Red Hook to pick up a couple of bags of compost that my wife had reserved through some city agency program or other. Afterward, I was able to find a spot to park, so I walked a loop around the area.
My Saturday morning started at Coffey Park. It was a beautiful day, so I looked for someplace to park and found a spot on Visitation Place. I have to say that I knew that Visitation parish was someone in this area, but I didn't know where. The Catholic elementary school closed down a long time ago, and I remember several students joining my class who came from Visitation.
I parked across the street from the Red Hook Community Justice Center. I couldn't tell what the building was, but I looked it up after. I walked down to Van Brunt Street to start my loop around the area. Of course, I decided that I couldn't do that on an empty stomach, so I got a slice. The place was open, so why not? And then off down Van Brunt, which, by the way, was the name of the Post Office building I used to go to as a kid (and my father worked there for a while, so I walked around behind it as well.)
The Brooklyn Public Library wasn't open yet (still early) but I took a picture because it just doesn't look like a library. I don't remember where this garden was. (According to Google Maps, there are a few green spaces, so there's no way to judge it.) And, of course, a brick wall of a space converted to retail. This included Ample Hills Ice Cream across from the Chelsea Garden Center.
Then it was up Beard Street (or is it down? It was southeast) to Richards Street, which would bring me back past the park again.
The streets are a little uneven over here, as can be seen in the first photo. Another green space, which is also nice to see. Then I was back in the park, which was good because they had an open bathroom!
Next up was Visitation parish with its interesting wood-cuts out front.
The rest of Richards Street, which included a classic car that made me wish I didn't fumble my phone trying to get video quickly!
I got a little confused when I reached Hamilton Ave. I crossed Woodhull Street over the highway, but I should've backtracked. I'd already walked on the eastern side before. It's still Hamilton Ave. I probably should've walked down Bowne Street.
Back onto Van Brunt Street
And, finally, I had to walk the other half of Visitation Place, the half on the other side from where I parked. I saw this St. Anthony statue behind Visitation minding the garden.
And that's it for this trip. Come back soon.
