Herkimer / Rockaway Ave / Cooper / Irving
Another pre-walk walk that had me retracing old ground to get to a handful of streets that were skipped on previous outings. Out of the almost 1.6 miles in this trip, I'd likely walked more than half of this before. And since this was before walk, there was little incentive to walk farther and more incentive to get to school a little early.
You might notice the Williamsburgh Bank Building (with an "h"), aka One Hanson Place (also with an "H"), and think "That's not Bushwick!" And you'd be correct.
Once again, the trains were messed up. There was going to be a 10-15 minute wait during morning rush hours for an R train to take me two stops. So I got out at Atlantic Ave to walk to the C train. The joke was on me though. I found the "G" train, no problem. I thought about riding back a stop for the C, but there was a bit of a wait time there as well. So I took and turn and went for the C ... except I took a wrong turn. And worse yet, it was the turn that I told myself, don't make by mistake. But I did anyway.
Down there (or "up there" from where I'm currently sitting), streets run together and all the blocks from different neighborhoods meet at different angles.
In any case, after a bit of a detour, I made it to the C and then to an A and then to Broadway Junction. Once I got there, I walked down the least scary part of Van Sinderen and came to the passage under the LIRR running down Atlantic Avenue. I didn't go under. (Still not the scariest part of Van Sinderen!)
And, as with my previous outing, I forgot to turn on the walking app (or I turned it on and it immediately paused itself, which has also happened).
I zigzagged up and down Havens Place, Jardine Place, (started up Sackman and then went back to ...) Sherlock Place (elementary!). Skipping past Eastern Parkway, I made it to Monaco Place and, finally, Pleasant Place (what? no, Peyton Place?) before starting up Rockaway Ave, which I've done before.
Crossing Broadway, I marched up Cooper St and finally over to Irving Ave to finsih off some off blocks of Bushwich that I missed because they didn't fit neatly into other walks, or because I made a mistake and wasn't looking at (or correctly reading) a map.
It was also amusing to discover that there were a couple of blocks that I didn't need to walk because the Brooklyn-Queens border runs through the blocks instead of down the streets in this corner of Bushwick. Odd, but true.
And that's it for this trip. Come back soon.
